Artists to Know

Here's my second installment of resources found to teach a group of kids about art.  This installment gives 3 minutes or less summaries of famous artists to know.  We go to see an Andy Warhol exhibit this week which I'm very excited about.  Plus, my new favorite site houses these awesome Sophia and Bella video's.  I love 'em!

Painting Lessons

For our awesome girl scout troop, we are learning about painting and art so we can visit an Andy Warhol exhibit next week.  Here are some resources we found to help us gain some artistic knowledge.

Still Life

A neat science project.  Buy sponges and cut them into cubes.  Add the ingredients listed on the sheet.  The only place I know of to buy the liquid bluing is Reams.  Add food coloring and within hours you'll have crystals growing.

Power Test for Classroom Management

I saw this in a second grade class on their last days of school. They called it the Power Test.  You choose one helper to monitor the room, everyone stands and looks at the clock for one minute very still.  It is supposed to help you gain your focus back and then you return to the activity.  The monitor looks for anyone who talks or wiggles and they move to an area closer to the clock to do another minute.  They were so serious about it!

The teachers table full of things to organize, clean and put away for summer.

Their "temporary desks" were black bags donated to put all the end of school papers in.

Great Quotes Part Four

“But that is the nature of being a parent, Sabine had discovered. You love your children far more than you ever loved your parents, and – in that love, and in the recognition that your own children cannot fathom the depth of your love – you come to understand the tragic, unrequited love of your own parents.”
– Ursula Hagi, “Freitod”, Hotel of Saints

An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do.”

–Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (Mr. Bennet)

Great Quotes Part Three

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies,” said Jojen. “The man who never reads lives only one.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons

“I feel, holding the books, accommodating their weight and breathing their dust, an abiding love. I trust them, in a way I can’t trust my computer, though I couldn’t do without it. Books are matter. My books matter.”
– Lori Larsens, The Girls
