Lenses on Reading
I can't say enough good things about this book. If you are a reading coach, literacy professor, or interested in getting a reading endorsement...you should read this book. I want to use it as the text the next time I teach Theories and Models of Reading. I loved the clear writing, the chronological layout of reading theories and the practical application to the classroom. Buy it!

Online educations
These were recommended to me by a friend who is the director of online education at a college here. If you are looking for an alternate approach to high school and college degrees, check these out.

Museum of Curiosity
Visiting local children's museums is one of our favorite things to do. For my son's birthday we tried one that recently opened called the Museum of Curiosity. You have to go at the right time of day or it can get pretty crowded but we had a great time with the hands on exhibits.
This was a piano that played music with bubbles.
What varying degrees of a hurricane feels like...
Powering water using a wheel and axle.
A whole city with a laundramat, theater, stores, houses, and post office.
This room was really neat with buttons to change the instruments, tempo, rhythm and record the song. We spent a long time in there.
An area for toddlers to play garden

Common Core Overview
If you would like a three minute video that explains what the Common Core Initiative is, check this out. The myths versus facts section to the right is also helpful and from a reliable source.

Celebrity Authors
One of my pet peeves is celebrity authors. Now, I'm sure there are some great people out there that actually like to write for children and have something worthwhile to say. They are the exceptions to this rule. (I'm speaking to you Jamie Lee Curtis!)
Most of the celebrity author books I read are... just lacking. Some people think that as long as people are reading, and as long as the name on the cover increases book sales, then it's all good.
I disagree. That's why this organization is a good one to keep an eye on.
